FSC Agency History

As a child welfare project adopted by the Junior League of St. Petersburg in 1938, the then-named "Children's Service Bureau" began offering professional counseling services to assist 63 dependent, neglected and delinquent children in its first year. Then agency's mission soon expanded to include children and their families struggling with poverty, stress, poor parenting skills and the effects of family violence.

As the needs of our community grew, so did the services offered by the agency. Today, Family Service Centers, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a long history of service commitment to vulnerable individuals, youth and families in Pinellas County.

Financed with public, private, donated funds and fees, the agency holds more than 20 contracts with state and local funders as well as with private corporations. FSC is fully accredited through 2011 by the Council on Accreditation for Children & Families, has earned A.S.S.E.T. accreditation by the Juvenile Welfare Board, and is a member of the Alliance for Children & Families. In the past 7 years, five FSC staff have been quarterly recipients of the prestigious JWB Cooperman-Bogue Award, which recognizes outstanding human service workers for exemplary community service to children and families and three FSCS staff have received the annual award.

FSC also knows the difference volunteers make in any project, and utilizes more than 157 volunteers in various programs, administration, and fundraising projects. Volunteers also play key roles in FSC’s Rape Crisis Program by providing important client support service equal to over 6,000 hours.
